What is FOMO? Simply put, it’s the acronym for Fear Of Missing Out. Some of us are especially prone to bouts of FOMO. Are you one of those people? I am.
In the age of social media, we are inundated with flyers and promos for events including: parties, concerts, socials, dinners, festivals, pop-ups– you name it!
The more people you follow online, and the more time you spend scrolling through apps, like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, the more you see of things to do, and we don’t want to miss out on the fun. We see pictures and videos during or after the event with people on live display living their best lives (or pretending to) and we want some of that.
Or at least we think we do.
In my case, this is prevalent when you’re a 20-something in college. I feel like I’ve been going to college forever, and every year of this experience I have had FOMO.
In my case, I always feel like I’m on the outside looking in. I don’t get invited to much of anything and I see “friends” enjoying themselves and posting it all for me and everyone else to see. Every time, I wonder, why not me?
Then I find out later the event wasn’t as exciting as portrayed online. Sometimes crime happens, someone gets hurt, someone goes missing, the hangout was dull AF, or the venue is packed and hot with little room for moving. And I hate cramped spaces.
A solution to FOMO, I think, is learning to be comfortable with yourself and enjoying your own company regardless of those you see around you. If you see an event you really want to go to and have no one to go with but still feel like you’d be missing a good time, go alone!
Sometimes, you might have more fun just enjoying the moment by yourself than you would if you’d waited on someone else to go along with you.
And then there’s always the other option: staying safe in the comfort of your own home! Maybe take a social media break for a couple weeks.
